Sensei Jean Frenette
9th dan Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate-Do — founder and technical director
Founder and technical director of Karate Boucherville, Sensei Jean Frenette has practised karate-do intensively for more than 40 years. He was crowned world champion five times, North American champion three times and Canadian champion twelve times, with more than 30 international titles. He has written seven books and over fifteen martial arts videos.
A student of Sensei Chuck Merriman (10th dan Goju-Ryu) since 1980, he has made more than thirty trips to Okinawa to train under Master Eiichi Miyazato, himself a student of Chojun Miyagi, founder of Goju-Ryu karate-do.
Beyond teaching, Sensei Frenette promotes karate on the international stage through demonstrations and seminars around the world — events that have drawn up to 15,000 spectators. He is also active in film and television through his company On Set Stunts, training actors and stunt performers and choreographing action scenes.
His home base remains the Karate Boucherville dojo, where he passes on his passion to young and old alike.
