A specialized class for advanced karateka

Bunkai — the study of the applications contained in kata — is not about adding outside techniques to the form, but revealing its logic, principles and continuity. The work focuses on the reality of application: close distance, angles, footwork, off-balancing, controls, strikes, locks and throws.

Hanshi Taira Masaji, 9th dan, a direct student of Eiichi Miyazato Sensei and president of the Okinawa Goju Ryu Kenkyukai, is internationally recognized for research that treats kata as complete, coherent fighting systems. In Boucherville, this work is taught under the direction of Sensei Jean Frenette, 9th dan, a student of Taira Sensei for over 35 years, assisted by Sensei Christian Joyal, 6th dan.

The Taira method in four principles

1 · Intact kata

Start from the form without distorting it.

2 · Sequence

Link techniques in a logical chain.

3 · Real contact

Work distance, angles, balance and control.

4 · Research

Test, understand and refine common principles.
